Enquiring minds want to know...What were the best 70s horror films you saw on the Criterion Channel? I just watched a Romero flick from the Between Night & Dawn collection called The Crazies from '73 last night. I am always amazed at what he, Carpenter, and Hooper were doing with zip for budget. It always inspires both my DIY and FTW spirits.
Other than that, I have to go with the obvious … THE WICKER MAN and INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS are still tremendous. And, not in that collection but it's from the '70s, on Criterion Channel, and a horror movie → HOUSE. What a film!
Thanks for the insights into your Halloween tastes. I think Leonard Nimoy steals the show in the IOTBS remake. You implicitly trust Spock...and then he's evil...it was so shocking when I first saw it. I still may be partial to the original 1956 Don Siegel film, tho. Kevin McCarthy comes apart almost as good as Ray Liotta in the 2nd half of Good Fellas.
Thanks for the Ganja & Hess recommendation, I subscribed to the Criterion Channel last night as a result. Full confession, it was also my b-day this week so it was really just a nice little gift for myself. I got caught up in Rocky Horror Picture Show last weekend, fell in love with it again, dug up the sequel from my own collection, and watched the very much inspired by Starstruck on my maiden Criterion voyage. I just needed something bright, day-glo, and uplifting after this week and Starstruck really did the trick. Now it is on to Ganja & Hess.
You are the second person in 2020 to recommend House, a movie I had never heard of until this year. It appears to be the kind of movie I need to watch...repeatedly.

Then you'll like GANJA & HESS, which I watched last night. About as low budget as it gets but really creepy and effective — leaning into budget limitations to its advantage. The use of sound is wild, as well — quite avant-garde for 1973. Here's a good article on the film → https://www2.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/sight-sound-magazine/comment/bradlands/bodies-off-ganja-hess-under-skin-flick

It's important you report back after watching HOUSE. 👍
